Lord Krishna, noticing the pitiful state of the villagers, lifted the Govardhan mountain on his pinky finger and offered shelter to the villagers under the mountain. The different poses of Buddha are called asanas. When standing, the hand is generally shown raised in a blessing gesture primarily conveying reassurance and in Sanskrit, it is called the Abhaya mudra. The abhaya mudra symbolizes protection, peace and dispelling of fear (Abhaya in Sanskrit). As per Buddhist texts, the lord had made this gesture upon attaining enlightenment.
